Classroom assessment for learning

Your students will spend more time writing. You can spend more time teaching!

Criterion Online Writing Service is an online instructional tool that assists students in grades 4 to 12 to practice their writing in a fun and motivating way.

It’s a simple three-step process:

1. Students write an essay and receive instant diagnostic and holistic feedback.
2. The teacher reviews the students’ essays and provides comments.
3. Students revise and rewrite their essays.

It’s easy, economical and it works. Since the Criterion service is available online, students and teachers can access it anytime from school, office or home.

The Criterion service motivates students with opportunities to work independently as they write and collaborate with instructors and peers to improve writing skills. All student essays, scores, annotated feedback and teacher comments are saved to a secure virtual portfolio that both the student and teacher can access.

The Criterion service supports teachers and helps students:

• The teacher establishes the parameters for each assignment. The Criterion service provides an effective initial evaluation of student writing ability and provides online, real-time access to writing assignments. Teachers can create and assign their own writing tasks. Each new topic and revised essay provides feedback that is specific to the assigned task.
• Students receive instant diagnostic feedback and scores on essay submissions through Criterion’s proven automated scoring technology. Students can rewrite their essays using feedback they receive online from both Criterion and their teacher. Using Criterion helps build student confidence and reinforces learning.

The Criterion service is an advanced writing tool that includes:

• Identifiable skill levels: Teachers can benchmark student writing to monitor placement decisions, adjust instruction and track progress.
• Immediate feedback: Students can review, revise and resubmit.
• A variety of topics: Teachers can select from Criterion’s large topic library or they can create their own writing topics with the help of specific guidelines provided.
• Trait feedback analysis: Feedback is provided on grammar, usage, mechanics, style and organization and development.
• Teacher feedback: Teachers have the ability to provide their own specific, personalized comments.
• Writer’s Handbook: Students can enhance their understanding of their errors and the writing process with access to an online reference guide.
• Flexible reporting options: Teachers can tailor reports by student, class or assignment to measure progress.
