TOEIC Test Helps Students Get Jobs at Walt Disney

Two students from Montreal have demonstrated that the TOEIC test really is a passport to the world – in this case to Walt Disney World.

Alexandra and Marie-Christine Bureau are twin sisters, age 22, who are students in the tourism and hotel management program at the French-language University of Quebec at Montreal. They see the world as a place to be explored and are always looking for ways to learn about other languages and cultures.

Walt Disney World seemed like a great place to begin exploring. They applied for positions and included their TOEIC scores on their resumes. “The TOEIC score is concrete proof of our ability in English,” says Alexandra. “Since the TOEIC test is known in many countries, we felt that the score would make our resumes stand out.”

After receiving the resumes, Walt Disney World officials conducted a series of interviews in English with the young women. As a result, Marie-Christine took a position as a restaurant hostess and Alexandra worked in the Canada pavilion at Epcot Center World Showcase.

The pair, who lived in Orlando, Florida, for several months in 2006, had a great time working at Disney. “It was the experience of my life,” recalls Marie-Christine. “Since I was surrounded by English speakers, I greatly improved my English ability.” Adds her sister: “I am looking forward to taking the TOEIC test again so that I can see how much progress I have made.”

Ultimately, it was a terrific experience for the twins, both personally and professionally. “I love the idea of being able to communicate with anyone – and anywhere in the world,” concludes Marie-Christine.
