Your students are talking.
Listen to them to improve teaching and your program
Student feedback is an important factor in ensuring that a program’s teaching and curriculum are outstanding. Directors need a valid and reliable tool for gathering student comments to guide improvements.
ETS Canada provides LanguSurvey, a student survey designed specifically for ESL programs. Based on extensive research, LanguSurvey covers four areas:
- The class
- The teacher
- Student effort and involvement
- Class outcomes
As well, programs have an opportunity to add up to 10 local questions. These can be used to gather feedback on topics such as homestay and social activities.
The LanguSurvey advantages
Many language programs have an in-house student satisfaction survey. However, collecting data by hand can be expensive and prone to error. LanguSurvey offers the following advantages:
- Valid, reliable and tested questions
- Scannable forms that make data collection easy, accurate and economical
- Data reports that give you the information you need to make important decisions
- A professional look that sends your students the message that their opinions count
LanguSurvey reports add value to your program
LanguSurvey reports give you important information for:
- Improving teaching: LanguSurvey help to diagnose teachers’ strengths and weaknesses. The information provides both managers and teachers with information to develop a plan for improvement and to find appropriate professional development opportunities.
- Making personnel decisions: Student ratings provide a valuable method of evaluating teaching effectiveness. Combined with additional information about teaching performance, LanguSurvey results can be useful for schools that are making hiring decisions.
- Revising curriculum: LanguSurvey provides important feedback about the learning materials, curriculum and outcomes. Programs can use this information in order to revise and improve curriculum.
- Comparing your program: Your school’s results can be compared with Canada-wide data for each question on the survey. This comparative data allows you to benchmark your results against the average of other language programs. This helps you to determine appropriate standards for your school.
- Marketing your program: In marketing to potential students, many schools emphasize the quality of the curriculum and their outstanding teachers. LanguSurvey provides you with the data from an independent source to support those claims.
Reporting of results
Once we receive the surveys, we scan them and provide you with the results within two business days. The reports provide you with the data for each question, sorted by class or teacher. Each question includes the Canadian average so you have an opportunity to benchmark your results.
Upon request, additional reports are available analyzing the data based on native language groups, gender or age. If desired, you can also view individual student responses based on student numbers.
Your school’s data is confidential and is not released to any other person or organization. We only use the results to compile aggregated data.
