| Classroom-based program helps students prepare for TOEFL iBT What’s the best way to prepare students for an internet-based test like the TOEFL iBT? For TOEFL instructor Kane Cao the answer is simple – use an internet-based program.“There is a distance between TOEFL preparation books available on the market and the actual test because the books do not have the same look and feel as the test,” says Cao, a teacher with New Oriental International College in Toronto. As a result, his students were often surprised by the structure and difficulty of the actual test. He was one of the early adopters of TOEFL Accelerator, a classroom-based online program that uses authentic TOEFL questions. In the test preparation component, the practice tests are identical in format and content to the actual TOEFL iBT test. Students receive scores based on the scoring format of the test. After using Accelerator, Cao’s students feel much better prepared and therefore more confident for test day. “When they take the actual test, students feel that they have had practice that is very close to the test. It’s excellent!” Students find the Accelerator scores and feedback to be a great indicator, says Susan Bates, an instructor with Vancouver Community College. “Finally, a practical exam-preparation tool that supplies students with an accurate method of gauging their readiness to sit for the test on exam day.” Janice Penner, an instructor at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC, says that Accelerator helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to maximize use of their study time. “Students also like the opportunity to do the practice questions which gives them a good sense of how the test is timed,” she notes. |
