New assessment – TOEFL Junior – being introduced by ETS

With English-language instruction beginning at earlier ages, the need for a well-designed, objective measure for younger students has moved Educational Testing Service to develop a new test – TOEFL® Junior.
English has become the language of global opportunity. In order for students to access a wide range of opportunity, they need English skills. The TOEFL Junior test can help you determine if your students are acquiring those skills.
The TOEFL Junior is a paper-based test designed for students aged 11-15. The test measures the degree to which students have attained proficiency in academic and social English skills.
“English proficiency is an increasingly important skill for students worldwide," explains Dr. Philip Tabbiner, Senior Vice President of ETS. "With instruction beginning at earlier ages, mastering English expands students' access to a range of educational, personal and professional opportunities.”
The TOEFL Junior has three sections:
- Listening Comprehension: This section contains 42 questions and takes approximately 35-40 minutes.
- Language Form and Meaning: This section assesses key language skills such as grammar and vocabulary in context. This section includes 42 questions and takes about 25 minutes.
- Reading Comprehension: This section has 42 questions and takes 50 minutes.
The TOEFL Junior is a distinct product within the TOEFL family of English-language assessments. While the TOEFL iBT sets the standard for the measurement of university level English proficiency, the TOEFL Junior is the appropriate assessment for younger students.
